This course provides a comprehensive view of patternmaking including the creation of a pattern of intermediate difficulty, designing a runner system using principles of metal flow and surface areas and mount into a standard compact for use with chemically bonded sand.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of patternmaking including other knowledge advantages of runner systems and calculations and the box less moulding process.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Health and safety requirements of all machinery and hand tools employed in the session
  • A breakdown of a drawing including draft taper, datums, centre lines, contraction and machining
  • Setting out of a pattern including a dimensional check sheet
  • Construction of a pattern with supervision, using a bandsaw, sanding disc, bobbin sander and pedestal drill and hand tools
  • Produce a final dimensional report of a pattern
  • Conduct a dimensional check of a pattern with metrology equipment provided
  • Design and make a simple runner system to fill the mould cavity effectively using a nomogram, including explanation of laminar flow and best practice of runner design
  • Construct a compact for use with chemically bonded sand using a plinth and well design and dowelling operations
